- The first step to avoiding a hijacking is to stay alert at all times and to be aware of your environment. Awareness is the key to avoidance.
- Have a plan, and know what you would do in advance. Play the “What if Game”.
- Keep your eyes open for anything out of the ordinary. Listen to your instinct. When something feels wrong it probably is.
- Keep all doors and windows closed and locked at all times.
- Vary your routes and times to all places you travel to regularly.
- Become a defensive driver, know your vehicle and plan your trip.
- When approaching your vehicle, walk with purpose and stay alert.
- Approach your vehicle with the key in hand
- Look around and inside the car before you get in.
- Avoid high crime areas, lesser traveled roads, isolated areas in parking lots and driving late at night.
- In traffic, look around for possible avenues of escape and leave yourself space to maneuver.
- While stopped, use your rear and side-view mirrors to stay aware of your surroundings.
- Have a plan if you are followed. Do not go directly to your home.
