How do i file a VAT RETURN?

hey alice
Vat or value added tax is filled by every 20th of the the following month of the month for which it is recognized.. for example for April vat will have to be payed by 20th of may
If 20th lies on a Sunday just make sure you pay at agent banks before then
The vat that is payed is the difference between the input tax (purchases) and the output tax (sales)
If say the invoices from suppliers total to 200,000 kshs tax and the invoices send to clients total a tax of 500,000 then the tax to be payed is 300,000?that is the difference
Assuming that you can clearly differentiate gross amount from vat amount, you get the difference then pay the amount after filling the vat return forms at agent banks clearly showing the computation above
upon filling the form then head to agent bank like Barclays and make the payment via cash or cheque by filling a special triplicate form from where you shall leave one copy at the bank and take the other two, but make sure the leaves are all stamped paid
This payment should be done on or before 20th?after paying take the leaves to a kra office from where you shall submit together with the vat returns form.. You have now filled a monthly vat return
Note in order to avoid any confusion or loss by not accounting well for vat then have the following additional measure
Enter all previous month?s transactions at lease before the 10th of the following month
Separate net amounts from vat amounts when recognizing sales and purchases
Plan to have sufficient cash flow so that you are able to pay on time hence avoid any strain and penalties that may arise

hey ezra
it is unfortunate that kra takes ages to refund tax but they will eventually do, do try to have all the documentation in place if they require to do a tax audit but the best solution for you is to offset the refund against the following periods tax liabilities

hi gabriel
thanks for your comment...now the form can be used without any worry because no major changes have occurred in the tax act and as long as your file them correctly the date is immaterial

hi Justus i understand your frustration
the kra system does have a sufficient capacity for one to retrieve pass words however though it is still possible by clicking the "forgot tab" on the login form...this form directs you to a form that ask you to input your pin number and email address...after imputing please click "reset password"...on doing this you will receive an email with your new password which you will now use...you can also change it to your own liking later on

here is the link to the form where you can start

hi javan
now one incurs VAT liability when they are registered VAT agents who have charged VAT to customers...if you charged VAT on your sales then you should file a return by 20th of the following month whether or not a liability arises...if you made no sales then you should file a return indicating the computation and indicate that you are not paying since you have no liability but are up for a refund that can be payed or netted off against the following months.

hi oimerru
thanks for the comment..now it is really unnecessary to have to file returns every year if you pay PAYE on your income supposing all your income is from one source that is employment
returns are meant to enable one file a self assessment indicating all their sources of income and their incomes
however there is good news for people whose only source of income is employment..that is if uhuru kenyatta's budget is to be implemented as is..however for now just file your returns since the declaration is not effective yet
