The primaryintention of cancer treatment is to achieve cure and improve survival. Anotherequally important intention gaining importance in recent years is to conservethe structural and functional aspects of the organ with cancer. Radiotherapyhas an important role in breast cancer as it helps in the attainment of boththese objectives of cancer treatment.Another area of active developmentin breast cancer is the establishment of breast conservation as the standard ofcare in early breast cancer. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) ConsensusDevelopment Conference on the treatment of patients with early stage invasivebreast carcinoma, held in June 1990, recommended breast conservation therapyfor the majority of women with Stage I or II breast carcinoma.
